This piece was fueled by inspiration from the wonderful painted ladies in the Charles Village neighborhood of Baltimore, MD. From there, an illustration with accompanied lettering was produced.
The sketching process was done outdoors looking at the porches in the neighborhood. When exploring different methods, a free-formed style best complemented the area’s aesthetic.
While vectorizing, a stroke was added to the lettering to enhance the piece. Once the lettering was completed, I set out to create the accompanying illustration. Choosing the painted ladies of Charles Village was the only thing that felt right.
Seeing the nature of the illustration, I felt it would be appropriate to create an editorial mock-up.
